Robocup 2016

On Saturday the 20th of August, Robocup was held. We had three year eights competing in Junior Robocup Theater as a team called the Selwyn Mad Hatters, and also 1 year five and three year sixes in a team called the Selwyn Cinderella competing in the same competition.

Alice, Abi and Julia did Alice in Wonderland. We had three different robots. We had the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the Cheshire Cat all as robots. We had to create robots that moved around a 1.8 meter board. We had made a lot of different props including a LED light up bush with roses on it, a backdrop with a picture of the white rabbit on it, tress, roses
and much much more.

There were judges who we all had an interview with us before our performance, and then they watched our performance and marked us. We were marked down one point for every time we touched our robots. Then afterwards at the prize giving they awarded the prizes. We were really lucky to have the Selwyn Mad Hatters win 2nd place out of sixteen teams which was amazing. Unfortunately our Cinderella team did not place but they still did really well.

Thanks so much for posting these pictures and talking about this event. We've just done the very same thing at our school and posted videos of the different performances on our class blog. To place second out of all those teams is an amazing effort - of course it has to be asked are you going to be making your way to Auckland to St Kents for the National Finals? Our regional competition here got cancelled so we had to have a run off at our school and we are sending two teams (or possibly one) to the nationals.
From an outsiders perspective there looked like there was a huge amount of work that went into your entries so thank you so much for sharing and talking about it.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. It is so sad that your regional competition got cancelled. We watched your videos on your blog and we think your teams would have done really really well. In Canterbury's this year we had 27 teams compete in junior rescue and 16 teams in junior theater. At least you can enter teams into nationals. At Selwyn House we have a rule that we only enter teams into nationals if they place in regionals. We are going to go to nationals and we are so very excited about it. It was a lot of work that we put into it, and we have a lot more work to be done, for example we need to fix one of our robots program, because on the day it ran into our table and our backdrop.
